Local Anesthesia Certification for Georgia Hygienists

Dec 3 / Dent ED Online
Georgia dental hygienists have recently added local anesthesia administration to their scope of practice!

This resource will guide you through the rules and certification process for hygienists.

Georgia dental hygienists are allowed to administer local anesthesia?

Yes! On June 1, 2023, local anesthesia administration was officially added to the scope of practice for Georgia hygienists. Any RDH licensed in Georgia may administer local anesthesia if they have taken a course that meets the requirements outlined by the Georgia Board of Dentistry in Rule 150-5-.07.

How can I become certified?

To become certified to administer local anesthesia, you must successfully complete a course that includes 30 didactic hours, 15 lab hours, and 15 clinical hours.

Dent ED Online offers a Georgia Board of Dentistry-approved certification course for Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists. This is a hybrid course that includes online didactic lessons and lab activities that are completed at your own pace prior to the in-person clinical portion of the course.

After successful completion of a Board-approved course, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Do I need to submit my completion certificate to the Board?

No, the Board does not require you to submit the course completion certificate. The Board has delegated the supervising dentist of the hygienist to ensure all course requirements are met.

At any point, the Board can request proof of certification. So it is important that you keep a copy of your completion certificate.

Do I need to renew my certification?

You are not required to renew your certification, but the Board does require 2 hours of approved continuing education per biennium, which shall include a review of local anesthetic techniques, contraindications, systemic complications, medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, and a general overview of dental office emergencies. These hours may be used as part of the twenty-two (22) hours of continuing education required each biennium.

Will I be required to have malpractice insurance?

The Board does not require dental hygienist to have malpractice insurance for the administration of local anesthesia, but it is recommended for all Georgia dental professionals.
